Radome (Radar Dome)

Radar Dome

This is the radar dome (radome) of the KEYX radar station based in California’s Edwards AFB. A radome is an electronic antenna enclosure and is typically used to enclose radar systems and satellite communications antennas. The composite radome shown here is a sandwich radome — a rigid, self-supporting shell type structure constructed of doubly-curved panels which form a spherical dome.

I’ve driven past it dozens of times over the years on my way to and from the Eastern Sierras and finally took the time to stop and photograph it. It’s located along U.S. Highway 395, north of Kramer Junction, and is part of a nationwide network of 160 high-resolution S-band Doppler weather radars operated by the U.S. National Weather Service.
