The Seven Oaks area in the San Bernardino Mountains is a favorite destination for off-road enthusiasts who enjoy scenic forest trails and a little adventure. The roads wind through towering pine trees, alongside mountain streams, and into remote areas where you can really appreciate the quiet beauty of the forest. Depending on the season, you’ll find everything from dusty summer trails to snow-covered routes in winter, making every trip feel a little different. It’s a great place for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, and there are plenty of spots to stop for photos, have lunch, or simply enjoy the mountain air.
One of the best parts about exploring the Seven Oaks area is that it feels like you’re getting away from the crowds without traveling far from Southern California. The terrain ranges from easy forest roads to more challenging rocky sections, so there’s something for drivers with different experience levels. As always, it’s a good idea to check current trail conditions before heading out, stay on designated routes, and pack essentials like water, recovery gear, and a map since cell service can be unreliable in parts of the mountains. With a little preparation, Seven Oaks offers a fun day of off-roading and some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the region.
I’ve owned a few 4-wheel drive vehicles over the years but the one shown here was my first (and only) Jeep. It was a 1985 CJ-5 with a 258 cubic-inch (4.2L) I6 AMC straight-six engine, a staple in CJ-series Jeeps for many years, prized for its low-end torque, which made it excellent for off-roading. I had a lot of fun with it and eventually sold it to a guy in Montana who had big plans for it. The last I heard, though, it was sitting out in his field with a blown engine, rusting away. Such a waste.
