Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica) is an attractive evergreen shrub known for its delicate, bamboo-like foliage, though it isn’t actually bamboo. Its new leaves often emerge reddish or bronze before turning green, and in cooler weather the foliage can take on striking red and purple tones. Clusters of small white flowers appear in spring, followed by bright red berries that can persist into winter, making it a popular ornamental plant for gardens and landscapes.
It can be a concern around pets because its leaves, berries, and stems contain cyanogenic compounds that can release cyanide when eaten. Dogs, cats, and other animals that consume significant amounts may develop symptoms such as vomiting, weakness, difficulty breathing, tremors, or other signs of poisoning, with the berries generally considered the greatest concern.
