This skeletal conifer, its trunk charred black and its branches stripped to bare, brittle, drooping claws, almost certainly met its end in one of the wildfires that periodically sweep through the chaparral and pine transition zones on the desert-facing slopes of the San Bernardino Mountains, a landscape where dry summers, dense brush, and Santa Ana winds combine to create ideal conditions for fast-moving, high-intensity burns.
