Colors of the Mecca Hills

Located near the Salton Sea, the Mecca Hills reveal a dramatic geologic history shaped by movement along the San Andreas Fault. Ancient crystalline rocks and younger sedimentary deposits have been uplifted, fractured, and folded by tectonic forces. Over millions of years, erosion has exposed rugged ridges and striking contrasts of reddish-brown, tan, and gray rock. These colorful formations offer a remarkable glimpse into the powerful forces that continue to shape Southern California’s desert landscape.
