Between Kingman and Seligman, the Arizona countryside opens into a broad, high-desert landscape of dry grasslands, scattered juniper, low mesas, and distant volcanic hills. Long stretches of road seem to run beneath an enormous sky, where changing clouds and light can become as important as the land itself. The country feels spare and quiet, with fences, ranches, and weathered roadside traces of Route 66 appearing only occasionally, giving the drive a sense of distance, solitude, and the lingering character of the old Southwest.
