Blue plumbago (Plumbago auriculata) is a graceful, evergreen-to-semi-evergreen flowering shrub native to South Africa, prized for its clusters of delicate sky-blue flowers that can bloom much of the year in warm climates. It has a loose, sprawling growth habit and can be trained as a shrub, groundcover, or climbing plant, making it a popular choice for sunny California gardens. Blue plumbago prefers well-drained soil, regular water while establishing, and plenty of sunlight, and it can become quite vigorous when conditions are favorable.
It is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats, although chewing the leaves or stems can cause mild irritation of the mouth or digestive system and may result in drooling, vomiting, or diarrhea. Its sticky plant sap can also irritate the skin of some animals and people. While it is not usually a serious poisoning concern, it is still best to discourage pets from eating the plant.
