Mormon Rocks is a distinctive geological landmark in Southern California’s Cajon Pass, where massive sandstone formations rise sharply from the desert landscape. Located along the San Andreas Fault, these ancient sedimentary rocks were uplifted and tilted by tectonic forces, then sculpted by wind and water into their unusual shapes. Named for Mormon pioneers who traveled through the pass in 1851, the area is also part of a historic transportation corridor connecting the Los Angeles Basin with the Mojave Desert. Today, freight trains passing beneath the towering formations provide a striking contrast between the region’s natural geology and its continuing role in railroad transportation.
