Red Rock Canyon

Located about 20 miles west of Las Vegas, Nevada, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is known for its towering sandstone cliffs, dramatic rock formations, and expansive Mojave Desert scenery. The area’s distinctive red and cream-colored sandstone was formed from ancient sand dunes approximately 180 million years ago, with iron oxide giving many of the rocks their reddish color. Part of the Spring Mountains, Red Rock Canyon offers a striking contrast to the nearby city, with rugged mountains, desert vegetation, scenic drives, and hiking trails that reveal the region’s remarkable geological history.
