The Santa Rosa Mountains rise dramatically along the western side of the Salton Sea, forming a rugged backdrop to California’s largest inland lake. Part of Southern California’s Peninsular Ranges, these mountains were shaped by millions of years of tectonic activity, faulting, and erosion. Their deeply carved canyons, rocky ridges, and barren desert slopes reveal the region’s complex geological history. The contrast between the blue waters of the Salton Sea and the weathered mountains creates one of the most distinctive landscapes in the Colorado Desert.
