Along the Road to Jalama
The winding road to Jalama Beach passes through some of Santa Barbara County’s most picturesque agricultural countryside, where rolling hills, secluded ranches, and broad stretches of farmland define the landscape. Agriculture has shaped the rolling countryside along this road for generations. Cattle ranching remains an important part of the local economy, while fields of beans, grains, and other crops reflect the area’s long tradition of farming. The region’s mild coastal climate and seasonal rainfall have influenced how the land is cultivated, with grassy hillsides providing grazing land and more level ground offering opportunities for planting. Here, a freshly worked field, a solitary farm building, and the surrounding hills illustrate the agricultural character of this relatively secluded corner of Santa Barbara County. The landscape remains a reminder of a time when ranching and farming, rather than residential and commercial development, defined much of coastal California.
