Ghost Signs of Another Era
October 17, 2026
During the early 20th century, the brick walls of commercial buildings served as enormous advertising canvases. Skilled sign painters applied colorful lettering and illustrations directly to the masonry, promoting everything from soft drinks and tobacco to local businesses and household products. These advertisements were intended to last for years, but exposure to sunlight, rain, and changing business fortunes gradually erased their messages. Today, these fading advertisements are known as ghost signs, surviving fragments of a time when advertising was painted by hand rather than printed on vinyl or displayed electronically. The weathered lettering and overlapping colors on this brick wall offer a glimpse into that nearly forgotten craft.
