Desert spoon (Dasylirion wheeleri) is a striking, drought-tolerant desert plant native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It forms a rounded rosette of narrow, stiff, blue-green leaves with sharply toothed edges, giving it a dramatic architectural appearance. Mature plants can produce a tall flowering stalk topped with numerous small cream-colored flowers, making desert spoon a popular choice for xeriscaping and desert-style landscapes.
It is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats, making it a relatively pet-friendly choice for desert landscaping. However, its long, stiff, sharply edged leaves can cause physical injury if a pet chews on or brushes against them, particularly around the mouth, eyes, or paws. For that reason, it is best planted where curious pets are less likely to get into the foliage.
