A Little Housekeeping
I’ve been doing some work on this website lately. Nothing particularly dramatic, although anyone who has spent time working with WordPress knows that even a small change can turn into an afternoon of questioning one’s judgment.
The biggest improvement is how the photographs and written entries are organized. Photos and Journal now have their own sections, each displaying the newest entry first. The Previous and Next links let visitors move through either collection chronologically without unexpectedly wandering from a photograph into an unrelated piece of writing.
I’ve also added a Gallery, where photographs can be browsed as thumbnails rather than one at a time. The Archive list both Photos and Journal entries and provides another way to explore older material, while Tags offer a way to find posts on related subjects.
Behind the scenes, I’ve made a number of smaller adjustments to navigation, typography, spacing, and the presentation of photographic information. Images now appear properly in the site’s RSS feed, too. The intention throughout has been to keep things simple, with the photographs doing most of the work.
The website still looks much as it did before, which is largely the point. It should be easier to get around without drawing attention to all the machinery that makes it possible.
Of course, there’s probably something I’ve overlooked. Websites, like houses, have a way of revealing another thing that needs fixing just as you’re putting the tools away.
