French lavender (Lavandula dentata) is an aromatic, evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region, prized for its soft gray-green foliage and distinctive purple flower spikes topped with small, wing-like bracts. It can bloom for much of the year in mild climates, especially with plenty of sunshine and well-drained soil. French lavender is drought-tolerant once established and is popular in California gardens for its fragrance, attractive form, and ability to attract bees and butterflies.
It is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats, although eating large quantities of the plant can cause mild digestive upset such as vomiting or diarrhea. Its strongly scented oils may also irritate some pets if they chew on it extensively. In normal garden exposure, however, French lavender is generally regarded as a pet-friendly choice and is a useful addition to a sunny, dry landscape.
