Once upon a time I did quite a bit of shore fishing down at the Salton Sea. Every summer we’d catch bucketfuls of tilapia, almost as many sargo, a few croaker, and if we were lucky a corvina or two. Tilapia was my favorite because it tasted the best. By the early 1980’s the buildup of chemical runoff flowing into the Sea from nearby cultivation was such that I decided to quit fishing there. I doubt the problem has improved over the years and I certainly wouldn’t recommend eating anything from the Salton Sea nowadays.
